One sweet treat that you can enjoy without the guilt is dark chocolate as it has many benefits.
Dark chocolate contains compounds that protect against the oxidation of LDL cholesterol in your blood. If these levels are lowered, then over time your risk of cardiovascular disease can reduce.
It also contains flavanols, which have been proven to increase blood flow to the brain. In turn, this can improve cognitive ability. The caffeine and theobromine in dark chocolate can even help improve brain function in people with Alzheimer’s disease for a short time.
Flavanols can also help increase blood flow to your skin, improving its hydration and reducing UV damage.
A sweet treat such as chocolate can also be a great mood booster. Chocolate contains the chemical phenylethylamine, which is the same chemical that is produced by your brain when you fall in love. It triggers the release of endorphins, therefore boosting your mood.
However, everything should be done in moderation, so we’re not suggesting you chomp on a whole bar of chocolate every day, but perhaps enjoy a few tasty squares once a week as a special treat.
